Understanding Molt Periosteal Elevators: No.9 and Beyond
Share
The Molt No.9 is one of the most widely used periosteal elevators in general dentistry and oral surgery, valued for its dual-ended, versatile design.
Design
One end has a sharp, pointed tip for fine periosteal separation near the gingival margin, while the opposite end has a broader, rounded blade for reflecting larger areas of tissue.
Common Uses
The Molt No.9 is commonly used for flap reflection during extractions, implant placement, and minor oral surgery, as well as for general soft tissue retraction.
Comparing to Other Patterns
Compared to a Woodson elevator, the Molt No.9 offers a more aggressive working edge, while a Freer elevator provides a thinner profile suited to delicate anterior sites. Many practices stock all three to cover different clinical situations.
