Why preserve the socket?
After an extraction, the alveolar ridge naturally resorbs — and most of that loss happens in the first few months. Less trauma also means less post-operative pain and faster healing for the patient.
Periotomes: cutting the ligament
A periotome has a fine, thin blade designed to be worked gently into the periodontal ligament space around the tooth. By severing the ligament fibres circumferentially, it loosens the tooth with minimal pressure on the surrounding bone — ideal before placing an elevator or forceps. Luxators: severing and mobilising
Luxators have a sharp, thin blade that cuts the ligament and gently mobilises the tooth as it is eased apically and rotated. Elevators: applying controlled force
Root and dental elevators use controlled leverage to luxate and lift the tooth or root from the socket once the ligament has been loosened.
