Dental Implantology Instruments: Sinus Lift, Osteotomes and Bone Grafting Tools Explained

Implant surgery has its own instrument vocabulary — osteotomes, sinus lift instruments, bone scrapers, mills and collectors. If you are building an implantology setup or preparing for an implant module, here is what each family does and why it is on the tray.

Osteotomes

Osteotomes are graduated instruments used with a mallet or hand pressure to prepare and shape the implant site. Depending on the tip design they can condense softer bone laterally (improving primary stability in low-density sites), expand a narrow ridge progressively, or infracture the sinus floor in the crestal (Summers-type) sinus lift approach. Straight and curved shanks handle anterior and posterior access; concave tips carry bone apically rather than removing it.

Sinus lift instruments

For the lateral window technique, sinus lift instruments are the curved, blunt elevators used to gently separate and raise the Schneiderian membrane from the sinus floor. Sets typically include several curvatures and working-end sizes so the membrane can be elevated progressively from different angles — the blunt, polished working ends are what protect the membrane from perforation. Bone scrapers and bone mills

Autogenous bone remains a valuable graft material, and these instruments harvest it: bone scrapers shave curls of cortical bone from an adjacent site directly into a collection chamber, while bone mills grind harvested bone blocks into particulate suitable for grafting. Both give you graft material without a separate donor-site surgery in many cases.

Bone injectors and collectors

Bone collectors gather bone during drilling for reuse, and bone injectors/carriers deliver particulate graft precisely into the defect or sinus — much cleaner than carrying graft on a flat instrument.

Calipers and mallets

A caliper is the humble instrument that prevents expensive mistakes: measuring ridge width, inter-implant distance and restorative space before and during surgery. A surgical mallet with replaceable inserts partners the osteotomes for controlled, dampened taps.
