Gracey Curettes vs Universal Curettes: Which Periodontal Instruments Do You Need?

Few instrument questions confuse dental students more than curettes: universal or Gracey? Which numbers? And where do scalers fit in? The differences are actually simple once you see what each design is for.
Sickle scalers: supragingival work
Sickle scalers have a triangular cross-section with a pointed tip and two cutting edges. The pointed back and tip make them effective for removing supragingival calculus — especially interproximally — but unsuitable for deep subgingival work, where the point can damage tissue. Every basic perio kit includes at least one anterior and one posterior sickle.
Universal curettes: one instrument, all surfaces
Universal curettes have a rounded toe and a semicircular cross-section, with the face at 90° to the lower shank and two cutting edges per working end. That geometry means one double-ended universal curette can adapt to nearly all tooth surfaces, both supra- and subgingivally. They are the efficient choice for general scaling and are usually the first curette students learn.
Gracey curettes: area-specific finesse
Gracey curettes are area-specific: the face is offset at about 70° to the lower shank and only one edge cuts, so each pattern adapts precisely to particular teeth and surfaces. The shank angles increase through the series to reach further back in the mouth. The classic assignments:
- Gracey 1/2 and 3/4 — anterior teeth
- Gracey 5/6 — anteriors and premolars
- Gracey 7/8 and 9/10 — posterior buccal and lingual surfaces
- Gracey 11/12 — posterior mesial surfaces
- Gracey 13/14 — posterior distal surfaces
Because the blade is offset and curved, Graceys excel at subgingival root planing where adaptation to root anatomy matters most.
So which do you need?
- Universal curettes for efficient everyday scaling with fewer instruments
- A Gracey set (a common starter selection is 5/6, 7/8, 11/12 and 13/14) for definitive subgingival root planing
- Sickle scalers for supragingival and interproximal calculus
- A periodontal probe — measurement guides everything else
Students should check their faculty list first, since schools specify exact patterns. Clinics often keep universals in general kits and reserve Gracey sets for perio appointments.
Keeping curettes effective
Curettes only work when sharp — a dull edge burnishes calculus instead of removing it and forces heavier working strokes.
